River flow and streamflow monitoring is a comprehensive system for real-time monitoring of the ecological flow of rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and other water bodies. It integrates data acquisition, transmission, processing, analysis, and early warning functions. By simultaneously measuring parameters such as water level, flow velocity, discharge, and rainfall, it provides data support for maintaining the survival conditions of aquatic organisms and the sustainable use of water resources.

The core objective of this system is to ensure the ecological flow of rivers. Ecological flow refers to the amount of water retained to maintain the structure and function of the river ecosystem. This equipment continuously monitors and ensures that the outflow does not fall below this threshold, thereby maintaining the stability of the river's ecological environment and the survival and reproduction conditions of aquatic organisms.

Technically, River flow and streamflow monitoring is an integrated system consisting of field measurement units, data transmission units, and a central management platform. The field measurement unit is the system's sensing layer and typically includes water level sensors, flow velocity sensors (such as Doppler current meters or radar surface current meters), and tipping bucket rain gauges. These sensors are installed at monitoring sections and can simultaneously and continuously measure water level, flow velocity, and rainfall within channels or rivers. Flow data is not directly measured, but calculated by the system using a hydraulic model based on measured water level, flow velocity, and preset cross-sectional morphology parameters.

The data acquisition unit collects the measurement results from various sensors and performs preliminary processing and storage. The processed data is then remotely transmitted to the central management platform via wireless communication networks (such as 4G/5G, BeiDou satellite) or wired connections. The platform software handles data reception, storage, in-depth analysis, and visualization. It can automatically calculate and determine whether ecological flow meets standards, generating various reports and trend curves. When the monitored flow value falls below the preset ecological flow warning threshold, the system automatically triggers an early warning, notifying management personnel to take timely scheduling or intervention measures.

In practical applications, this equipment primarily serves water resource management and ecological protection. In monitoring the outflow of water conservancy and hydropower projects, it is used to supervise whether power stations or dams are releasing sufficient ecological flow, a key technical means to meet environmental protection requirements. In river and lake ecological restoration and health assessment projects, long-term continuous flow data is the basis for assessing the degree of ecological water use satisfaction and analyzing changes in hydrological conditions. Furthermore, by combining rainfall data, the system helps analyze runoff sources and causes, providing a scientific basis for integrated watershed management.

Therefore, River flow and streamflow monitoring transcends the traditional scope of hydrological monitoring. It integrates hydrological sensing technology, IoT communication, and data analysis technology to form a complete ecological flow monitoring solution. It achieves closed-loop management of ecological flow from monitoring and assessment to early warning, pushing ecological water use management from qualitative requirements to a new stage of quantitative, refined, and intelligent management. It is an important technological tool for implementing water resource protection and promoting harmony between humans and water.
